Bendigo's bravest citizens were recorded on rolls kept by the Royal Humane Society (Victoria) and the Department of Mines, Victoria. To receive recognition for one of these awards a person had to risk their own life in an attempt to rescue another. This snapshot is dated 6 May 2021.

FORCES WAR RECORDS - UNITED KINGDOM, ROYAL RED CROSS DECORATION, 1883-1994
The Royal Red Cross was instituted as a decoration by Queen Victoria by royal warrant of 23 April, St George’s Day, 1883 for award to ladies who showed special devotion while nursing the sick and wounded of the Army and Navy. The Royal Warrant said that it be bestowed ‘upon any ladies, whether subjects or foreign persons, who may be recommended by our Secretary of State for War for special exertions in providing for the nursing of sick and wounded soldiers and sailors of our Army and Navy’. The decoration was specifically extended to the Nursing Services of the Royal Air Force in 1920 and to men in 1977. The award is now restricted to members of the Nursing Services of the Armed Forces and properly constituted Auxiliary Nursing Services working under Armed Forces control.

ANCESTRY - UNITED KINGDOM, SILVER WAR BADGE RECORDS, 1914-1920
In September 1916, King George V authorized the Silver War Badge (SWB) to honour all military personnel who had served at home or overseas since 4 August 1914 and who had been discharged because of wounds or illness.The award was not confined to Britons: servicemen or women from anywhere in the Empire were entitled to it. Any British ancestor who served in the Great War, survived, but was discharged from the forces before 31 December 1919 may well be on the rolls of the SWB contained in this database.
