SURVEYORS

 

They are also known as land surveyors.


Surveyors may have trained at a university. See University Records.

Surveyors may be employed by local councils as municipal surveyors. See Municipal Officers.

Surveyors are employed in the public service. See Public Servants.


LICENSING AND REGISTRATION

Licensing of surveyors had begun from at least 1844. From 1890 if a surveyor's licence was revoked a notice was to appear in the Victorian Government Gazette.

The registration of licensed surveyors began in Victoria in 1895. Unregistered people were prevented from practising as licensed surveyors from this time. A register of registered licensed surveyors appeared in January 1896 in the Victorian Government Gazette and lists of registered licensed surveyors appeared annually in January in the Victorian Government Gazette from this time. Public Record Office Victoria has records of the Board of Examiners for Licensed Surveyors 1860-1895 and Surveyors Board 1895-1955. These are not online.

At present in order to operate building surveyors need to be registered. The building practitioners register includes building surveyors, building inspectors, quantity surveyors, engineers, draftsperson, domestic project managers, erectors/supervisors of temporary structures, commercial builders, domestic builders and demolishers.
