Licensing of surveyors had begun from at least 1844. From 1890 if a surveyor's licence was revoked a notice was to appear in the Victorian Government Gazette.
The registration of licensed surveyors began in Victoria in 1895. Unregistered people were prevented from practising as licensed surveyors from this time. A register of registered licensed surveyors appeared in January 1896 in the Victorian Government Gazette and lists of registered licensed surveyors appeared annually in January in the Victorian Government Gazette from this time. The building practitioners register includes building surveyors, building inspectors, quantity surveyors, draftspersons, domestic project managers, erectors/supervisors of temporary structures, commercial builders, domestic builders and demolishers.
