In Melbourne several tram companies and tramways trusts merged to form the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board in the years 1916 to 1922. Tramways were also operated in Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo.
Public Record Office Victoria holds tramway records from 1877 to 2003. These include bus employees (VA 2692, VA 2693, VA 2694, VA 1044 and VA 2984). More recent records may be closed to the public. It also holds records for the following private tramway companies and tramways trusts:

VICTORIAN RAILWAYS - ELECTRIC STREET RAILWAYS
Victorian Railways operated two tram routes: St.Kilda - Brighton Beach (1906-1959) and Sandringham - Black Rock (1919-1956). The latter had an extension to Beaumaris (1926-1931). For tramway employees employed on these routes see Railway Employees.
Public Record Office Victoria holds tramway records 1902 to 1918 (VA 747).

TRAMWAY MUSEUM SOCIETY OF VICTORIA
The Tramway Museum Society of Victoria Inc. has been preserving trams and related infrastructure since 1963. In this time they have collected Melbourne cable trams, electric trams from across Australia, buses and work trucks from Melbourne and tramway related items of interest. They operate the Tramway Heritage Centre in Bylands where most of their cable trams, electric trams, buses and collectables are housed.
BUS AND COACH SOCIETY OF VICTORIA
The Bus and Coach Society of Victoria was founded in December 1968. They aim to cater for all those who have an interest in road passenger transport both in Victoria, and Australia more generally. This includes both present day operations as well as the history of both services and vehicles.

MELBOURNE TRAM MUSEUM
The Melbourne Tram Museum is a volunteer-based non-profit group. They manage and operate the museum located at 8 Wallen Road, Hawthorn – the former Hawthorn Tram Depot – under a lease from VicTrack, focusing on the preservation and display of Melbourne’s tramway history.

BALLARAT TRAMWAY MUSEUM
The Ballarat Tramway Museum was formed to preserve the tramway experience that existed on the streets of Ballarat from 1887 to 1971. Trams are operated along a public road on an original section of the track, using authentic methods of operation such as conductors, paper tickets, uniforms, tram stops, and original style paperwork. The Tram Museum and Depot displays some of the tramcar collection, presentations with photographs, videos, tramway memorabilia, trammie stories, souvenirs and book shop.
