Hairdressers were considered health professionals until 1985 and as such needed to be registered. Registration has not been required since 1985.
The registration of hairdressers began in Victoria in 1936. Unregistered people were prevented from practising hairdressing from this time. A register of registered hairdressers appeared in January 1938 in the Victorian Government Gazette and lists of registered hairdressers appeared annually in January in the Victorian Government Gazette from this time; these were either a full register or a supplementary list.
