OVERVIEW

The Civil Aviation Branch founded in 1920 was based in Melbourne within the Department of Defence. In 1936 it became the Civil Aviation Board. In 1939 this was replaced by the Department of Civil Aviation. This was absorbed into the Department of Transport in 1973.

 

PILOTS AND FLIGHT CREW

Records relating to commercial pilots' and navigators' licences are held by the National Archives of Australia. Commercial pilots and navigators were required to be licensed from at least 1917.

 

FORCES WAR RECORDS - UNITED KINGDOM, GRANTED AVIATORS AND AERONAUT FLYING CERTIFICATES, 1888-1928

British and Commonwealth Personnel, including serving Officers who were granted Aviators and Aeronaut flying certificates by the Royal Aero Club, after successfully completing a series of tasks.

AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE WORKERS

Records relating to ground engineers' and aircraft maintenance engineers' licences are held by the National Archives of Australia. Ground engineers were required to be licensed from at least 1922. Aircraft maintenance engineers were required to be licensed from at least 1931.
