Victoria was originally the Port Phillip District of the colony of New South Wales and permanent white settlement began in 1834. In 1851 Victoria became a separate colony. In 1901 with the federation of the Australian states the colony of Victoria became the state of Victoria in Australia. The capital of Victoria is the city of Melbourne, with a population of about 4.93 million.
