Victoria was originally inhabited by hunter-gatherer Aboriginal people for at least 65,000 years. From 1788 Victoria was part of the British colony of New South Wales. It was originally known as the Port Phillip District and permanent white settlement began in 1834. In 1851 Victoria became a separate colony.
